Sustenance 2003

Wood, ash, water, halogen lamp, electric cord

I am concerned about how disconnected we have become from our sources of food, and how we seem to neglect our health and environment in the pursuit of what could be called manufactured food. This work literally focuses light and attention on those elements needed to sustain us. The light passes through a water-filled container in the wooden box, which then traverses the air to create moving patterns on the soil—the ashes created in burning the excess wood produced in making the platter below.

食糧源との関係が薄まってきて、製造されたと言って良い食物のために健康と環境を軽視することに対して心配はある。この作品は、まさに我々を支えてくれる必要な要素に光と注目を集めるものである。光は木材の箱に入っている水入りの容器を通ってから、吊るされている箱と皿の空間を渡って木漏れ日のように下の皿を作った時にできた切れ端の燃やし後からなる土にちらつく。
