My class at university was asked to create street banners to be hung from light and telephone poles in an ethnically and culturally diverse yet depressed area of the city as part of an effort by the city to beautify and revitalize the neighboorhood and promote greater sense of community. My design was one of the many selected to be installed. Recounting my own childhood, during which I attended a variety of schools due to frequent moves, I understand the importance of a familiar space for children to play, daydream and be themselves. The banner attempts to visualize that one tree that a child can sit under and gaze up at the clouds, a tree that could be found anywhere but takes on special significance when it is near what a child calls home.

ある民族的文化的に多様な不況地域の美化、生き返らせること、コミュニティー感を強めることを目的する企画の一部として私が入った授業が依頼を受け、その地域にある街灯や電柱にかける旗を作ることになった。私がデザインした旗は設備されることになった多くの旗の一つであった。自分の子供時代を振り返れば引っ越しが多かったため、様々な学校に通い、自由に遊ぶなり空想するなり自分らしくいられるなり、なじみの場所が大事なことが理解できた。この旗のデザインは、子供が下に座って雲を眺めることができる木を表現する。この木はどこにでも普通の木だが、子供にとっては、自分の「家」の近くにあると特別な存在を持っている。
