Pink Chirashi 2004

Although made for a class project, Pink Chirashi is also a personal reaction to the sexually explicit leaflets pasted to telephone booths, poles, and elsewhere in Japan. "Pink" refers to their sexual content, much like "blue" does in the West, and "chirashi" is Japanese for flyer. Their distribution is often concentrated in and around entertainment districts, yet during my travels I was surprised to find them in many other locations of cultural and artistic value, such as shrines, parks and museums. The contrast of the beauty and awe of incredible structures and spaces to the sensual elements of our worldly everyday existence was intriguing.

The book's bright, vivid colors reference those of the pink chirashi found within, while the structure both reflects the built environments of Japan's cities and interrupts the reader's view of the featured image—the clash of the magnificent with the mundane. The text is uncomfortably close to edges, creating competition between foreground and background, and to add more interest, descriptions of the cities and other info is provided to learn about places around the country.

課題として作ったものの、「ピンクチラシ」は公衆電話や電柱など日本の様々なところに貼ってある好色なチラシに対する反響である。主に娯楽場の付近に集中しているが、日本を旅していると、寺、公園、博物館など文化的、芸術的な価値がある他の場所にたくさんのピンクチラシを見つけ、驚いた。並外れた建物や空間の美しい素晴らしさと肉体的な仕掛けのあるありふれた日常生活の対照は興味をそそった。

冊子の配色は掲載されるチラシの明るくて鮮やかな色を引用し、構成は日本の都市の建て込んだ環境も反映して紹介されるものの写真を遮っている。これはまさに壮麗さと平凡さの衝突である。前景と背景が張り合うようにボディーは縁に落ち着けないほど近く位置している。さらに興味を引っ掛けるために、日本の様々なところについて学ぶことができるように日本の都市に関する短い説明と他の情報が掲載されている。
