A New American Century 1998

In the late 90's I became concerned about how emerging technology could be utilized in the infringement of the privacy and civil liberties of US and world citizens now and in the future (relaxed regulations by the FCC, the Clipper chip, the reactionary anti-terrorism bill after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and other issues come to mind), and I created this piece in response to those concerns. It can be argued that the US flag most strongly represents freedom and liberty to Americans and people abroad, and it is the "death" of these ideals that is illustrated here. Furthermore, the 50 stars are replaced by ones and zeros, the two digits in binary code, to reference the medium for this danger to freedom. Given what has transpired since 9/11, I would say that this image is more relevant today than in 1998, although I maintain hope for a rational future.

この作品は、1990年代の後半に米国連邦通信委員会が企業に対する規則をゆるめた事、クリッパーチップ計画、1993年に起きた世界貿易センター爆破事件の後に定められたクリントン政権の反動的なテロ対策などのように、新しく現れる技術の利用が当時と将来の米国国民と世界の人々のプライバシーや自由への侵害をもたらす恐れに関して不安を持ち、それに対する感応として作ったものである。アメリカ人にとって、おそらく、外国人にとっても米国の国旗が最も象徴するのは自由の解放と言っても良いだろう。その理想の「死」をこの作品に表現しようとした。さらに、国旗の50個の星の代わりに２進数コードの２桁1と0を用いたことで、自由への脅威の媒体となれる情報技術に関係付けた。2001年9月11日以来の傾向を見れば、この作品は1998年より今に妥当すると言えるだろ。しかしそれにしても、私はまだ道理に基づいた未来があるように前向きでいる。
